Work Experience for School Students in Lambeth or Southwark

Work experience at the Young Vic runs year round, except August and usually lasts one week. Placements are based with our Taking Part team, although they will be able to experience work in other departments. All of our placements are admin based, with opportunities to observe work in the theatre when possible, and have an emphasis on learning about the running of a theatre.

If you are more interested in gaining experience in performance or production please look at our participation opportunities for Young People.

We particularly support our local secondary schools in placing their students for work experience, and because of this priority is given to students who live or study in Lambeth or Southwark.

Our work experience is often booked up to a year in advance so we recommend that you contact us as soon as you know which dates you want.

If you live or study in Lambeth or Southwark and would like to apply for a work experience placement please email schools@youngvic.org. We'd love to hear what you hope to experience during your time with us and please be sure to include specific dates that work for you.

As there is a large demand for our work experience placements we are unable to offer placements to young people outside of Lambeth and Southwark. If you aren't from these boroughs you could try contacting your local theatre. It is advisable to phone the theatres that interest you to ask if they offer work placements and to check the correct person to contact.

Placements

The Young Vic values the opportunity for higher education students to gain work experience in a professional environment at the start of their careers and offer placements for students in a range of departments:

  • Wardrobe
  • Stage Management
  • Sound
  • Lighting
  • Taking Part

Priority is given to students with a specialist interest in the work of the department they are placed with so that the placement is of high quality and mutually benefits both parties. If you would like to apply for a placement in one of our production teams, please send a current CV and cover letter (or email) to our Production Administrator, mengfeiliu@youngvic.org, or to kateaislingjones@youngvic.org if you are interested in a Stage Management placement. If you are looking for a placement with our Taking Part team, please email learning@youngvic.org.

Please include in the subject line which department you would like a placement within.

As there is a large demand for placements at the Young Vic we highly recommend that you clearly state your relevant experience in your cover letter, along with what you would hope to gain from a placement.
