Sundown Kiki

In November 2021, we filled the Maria Studio with sequins, celebratory togetherness, and a healthy dose of shade with our Taking Part production Sundown Kiki. This production brought the world of theatre and ballroom together in explosive evenings of music, dance, walking, and partying. Created with and performed by Queer young artists from the Global Majority, directed by Tristan Fynn-Aiduenu, with Creative Direction from Jay Jay Revlon and Sound Design by XANA, Sundown Kiki was a bold celebration of Queer South London in all its glory.

Our company of young people worked with a team of incredible professional artists to explore creative expression in all its forms, created a community in which to explore aspects of their identity through theatre and performance, and had the opportunity to take part in a range of different creative activities (including acting, voguing, and costume design), in developing a brand new piece of theatre to take to the Maria Studio.

We also made use of live broadcasting so that audiences could enjoy a night of vogue, dance, celebration, and shade from the comfort of their homes!

*Black and Global Majority is a term that we use at the Young Vic in place of terminology such as 'Person of Colour' and 'BAME'. We acknowledge that there is no perfect wording to represent the complexities of each individual identity, and we know the term ‘Black and Global Majority’ is not perfect. However, it is the only definition at this present time which does not centre whiteness, and is also factually true - over 80% of the world’s population make up the Global Majority.
