Trying to break into the creative industry can be daunting. Endless job applications, not knowing who to talk to, continuously looking for the next event or workshop in your area… We’ve all been there. But we think it shouldn’t have to be like that. We want to empower young people, give them the opportunity to think about their future, ask questions and provide them with the tools they need to become the next generation of leaders in the creative industry, regardless of their background.

The Lowdown Exchange

The Lowdown Exchange is a three-day festival for young people interested in the creative industry. From Wed 19 to Fri 21 Apr, the Young Associates will be hosting a range of workshops and events focused on developing skills, finding new career paths and meeting other young creatives.

The festival will culminate in a celebration on Friday night where everyone is welcome to connect with like-minded individuals. Whether you're a writer, designer, musician, or artist, The Lowdown Exchange offers a unique opportunity to network with industry professionals, learn from experienced creatives and develop your skills.

Don't miss this chance to engage with the creative community and take your career to the next level.

You are welcome to come to as many events as you want, but please sign up to one workshop only.

  • Behind the Scenes: The YV Experience

    Join us backstage for a special opportunity to meet the Young Vic staff and explore the inner workings of our theatre! This event is designed for anyone who is interested in learning more about the different departments that make up a theatre and the roles they play in bringing productions to life.

    From set design and lighting to costume design and stage management, this is a great opportunity to gain insight into the world of theatre and to network with industry professionals. Whether you're a playwright, actor or designer, this event will give you a better understanding of how the theatre operates and what it takes to put on a successful production.

  • From the West End to Fringe with Rasheka Christie Carter

    Thu 20 Apr, 5-7pm. 

    Explore what it’s like to be a Resident Director in the West End with a particular focus on Broadway transfers for both plays and musicals. This workshop will provide an in-depth look at the US show structure, the various departments that the Directing department interacts with, and how long-running shows are maintained.

    During this workshop, you will also have the opportunity to explore the structure of the Directing department, including how to balance your own artistic voice with that of the director, how to effectively manage large casts, and gain insight into the day-to-day responsibilities of the role. This workshop will offer valuable insights and practical knowledge to help you navigate the world of Broadway transfers and maintain long-running shows with confidence.

    Rasheka is a theatre director based in South London. Her directorial debut was the critically acclaimed ‘Sticks and Stones’ at the Tristan Bates Theatre. Most recently, she has worked on West End productions such as Bring It OnTo Kill a Mockingbird and My Fair Lady. She has also worked on theatre projects at Edinburgh Fringe, The Cockpit, English Touring Theatre and The University of West London.

  • The Improv Toolbox with Nadia Nadif

    It's natural to feel nervous or even scared when you step onto a stage or set. But those fears can hold you back from giving your best performance and fully embracing the joy of acting. In this improv workshop, Nadia will help you move past your fears and discover a new sense of freedom in your acting. Through a series of fun and engaging exercises designed to help you let go of self-consciousness, build confidence, and unlock your creativity, you'll learn to trust your instincts, take risks, and collaborate with your fellow actors in exciting new ways.

    Nadia is an actor trained at the University of Hull and with National Youth Theatre. She is an Associate Actor for The Factory, Althea Theatre and The PappyShow. Naida is also part of musical theatre improvisation troupe Show Up who have a monthly residency at the Hen and Chickens Theatre.

  • The Art of Movement: A Masterclass with Mateus Daniel

    Discover where your movement qualities derive from with Mateus’ Movement Masterclass. Through guided improvisation, free-flowing movement, and choreography, you will explore the endless possibilities of your body and push your movement capabilities to new heights.

    In this workshop, you will uncover the unique qualities that make our movement style our own and use them to create dynamic worlds and characters that tell physical stories. Movement is a universal language, and this class will provide a space for young creatives to express themselves in ways that feel most authentic and representative.

    Come ready to move, create, and discover the limitless potential of your body!

    Mateus is a Movement director, dancer and actor from South London. He has built a love and curiosity for telling stories physically that express themes of culture, race, change and transitions, and has used his experiences within dance and theatre to influence his current lyrical style.

  • The Writer’s Lab with Na’Imah Laurent-Dixon

    Na’Imah’s screenwriting workshop is designed to help you craft an outstanding TV pilot script!

    In this workshop, you'll receive an introduction to the essential elements of a successful TV pilot scripts and learn from examples of great pilots. You'll generate your own ideas, begin crafting a first draft, and receive feedback from Na’Imah and fellow participants as you workshop your drafts together.

    By the end of the workshop, you'll have a solid understanding of the TV pilot format and the skills to start writing your own. You'll also have the opportunity to connect with other writers, gain valuable feedback on your work, and develop your ability to provide constructive criticism to others.

    Whether you're an experienced writer or new to the craft, this workshop will provide you with the tools and knowledge to take your screenwriting to the next level. This is an incredible opportunity to learn, grow, and connect with fellow writers!

    Na'Imah is a multifaceted creative with a passion for writing, teaching, and filmmaking. She received her degree in English Literature from the University of East Anglia and her masters in Black Humanities from the University of Bristol. Na'Imah has designed and taught over 40 workshops on screenwriting. She is a published poet and a volunteer teacher of creative writing for children and young people.

  • Creative Connections: A Networking Party with music from HabibTati

    Don’t miss this night of celebration as we wrap up a series of events and workshops aimed at empowering and connecting young creatives.

    There is no one set way to navigate the arts world, so we want to bring together young creatives from diverse fields, including theatre, design, film and more. Whether you're looking to connect with potential collaborators, or you are just starting out your creative career, this is the perfect opportunity to connect and vibe.

    As part of our celebration, HabibTati will take over the decks with sounds and rhythms from SWANA and beyond. Experimenting with hyperpop and club music, Tati brings sounds of bandari that will make you shake your hips and your lips. From an Iranian, Armenian + Arab background, she is heavily inspired by her background and upbringing, training in keys and singing. For her, it is about experimenting with music, dancing and ultimately finding identity.
